Interior designers seemed downcast as they dismantled rooms they’d decorated for display during the 2009 Designer Showhouse at Ortega Landing. During the sale, someone bought a mattress and springs, an Oriental plant stand, some artsy figurines and a wooden “tsunami” bowl, said Susan Kelley, showhouse chairwoman. Some stuff wasn’t for sale because designers had brought items from their own shops or homes, or they borrowed items from store showrooms, art galleries or friends’ homes. Luten and fellow designer Heidi Hall-Jones called the 2009 show one of the best in years because there were more new artists this year bringing fresh energy and ideas.
